Bathroom renovation without the dirt and the noise

Outdated, not accessible for the disabled – there are many reasons to renovate a bathroom. Taking out the old tiled section in the process is not absolutely necessary. It can be clad in PLEXIGLAS® instead.

When old tiles need to be taken out during bathroom renovations, it not only causes a lot of dirt and noise, but replacing the tiles is also very expensive. Instead, do-it-yourself enthusiasts can paint the surfaces themselves, glue on a film or have an expert install new tiles on the existing surface. However, paints and film quickly show cracks and scratches and installing tiles takes time and costs a lot of money. An alternative that is both robust and time-saving is large PLEXIGLAS® panels that are installed on the tiled section.

Easy installation

Various specialists offer two different types of PLEXIGLAS® as cladding for walls and shower walls for bathroom renovation: PLEXIGLAS® Hi-Gloss and PLEXIGLAS® Optical HC. “For bathroom design, both have the large benefit of being easy to process, as is our brand acrylic glass in general. Drilling and cutting to size are both feasible without any problems,” explains Lisa Langel, expert for interior construction at PLEXIGLAS®. “The material can be directly cut to size when being installed in the bathroom, which would not be possible with a glass cladding.”

Dream bathroom made easy

Renovating a bathroom becomes even simpler with PLEXIGLAS® – and of course the modern wall and shower wall cladding can also be used in new bathrooms.

The printed PLEXIGLAS® Optical HC plate is connected to a stabilizing background, such as a hard-foam board, and can then be installed onto the tiled section via a frame system or glued directly to the tiles.

Surfaces with a depth effect

Which of the two materials to use primarily depends on the visual the bathroom planners want to achieve. But both product groups have one thing in common: “Surfaces made of PLEXIGLAS® Hi-Gloss as well as PLEXIGLAS® Optical HC have an unusual depth effect which makes them seem particularly elegant,” says Langel. PLEXIGLAS® Hi-Gloss creates this effect with an additional highly glossy and transparent PLEXIGLAS® layer on the colored layer beneath. This makes the colors seem even more vibrant and intense.

For those who prefer to decorate their walls or shower walls even more when renovating their bathroom, the inherently colorless PLEXIGLAS® Optical HC allows for further design possibilities in addition to the unusual depth effect. For example, the processors can print decorations such as stone or wood patterns, or even individual photographs on one side of a two-millimeter PLEXIGLAS® Optical HC plate. “Good printability makes almost endless design variations possible,” says Langel.

Ideas for a modern bathroom

Do-it-yourself enthusiasts and specialists alike can either glue the wall cladding or shower walls made of PLEXIGLAS® Hi-Gloss and PLEXIGLAS® Optical HC directly to the tiled section or install them in a profile system. Formats of up to two-by-three meters can be used here. “The sheets create large, homogeneous, jointless surfaces in the bathroom,” says Langel. “This is not only the current trend in bathroom design, but also has the benefit that lime and dust cannot stick to the surface as much.” To ensure that the new look of the modern bathroom is preserved, the scratch-resistant PLEXIGLAS® Optical HC can be used or PLEXIGLAS® Hi-Gloss can be coated with a scratch-resistant layer on one side – so even falling shampoo bottles cannot harm the new bathroom design.
