- Röhm is an established manufacturer of protective films for high-quality HPL panels for indoor and outdoor applications
- PLEXIGLAS® and EUROPLEX® films are durable, robust, scratch-resistant and UV-resistant
- Chemical bonding prevents delamination
High-pressure laminate sheets (HPL) have proven to be a robust material with high design flexibility for furniture surfaces and fronts. However, quality stands and falls with the properties of the uppermost protective layer, which must be extremely tough, scratch-resistant and easy to clean. Above all, the protective layer must never detach from the sheet itself – a process known as delamination that ruins the appearance of the material. Röhm GmbH manufactures special films that meet these strict demands. The company has been collaborating with manufacturers of HPL panels for over 20 years to develop durable protective films for indoor and outdoor applications under the PLEXIGLAS® and EUROPLEX® brands. Röhm will showcase the properties and possible use cases for these films in interior and outdoor design applications – such as for garden furniture or wall claddings in living and commercial spaces – at its booth A011 in hall 1.2 at interzum – the leading international trade fair for the global furniture supplier sector, which takes place in Cologne on May 9–12, 2023.
Protection against moisture and UV radiation
“PLEXIGLAS® and EUROPLEX® films have been established products on the market for protecting HPL panels against UV radiation, moisture and scratches for many years now,” says Ghirmay Seyoum, Technical Manager in the Films product segment at Röhm Acrylic Products. “The highly transparent films retain their vibrancy even when subjected to intense sunlight and prevent the color layer of the HPL sheets from yellowing, thus ensuring their permanent color stability.” This is essential for ensuring authentic colors and the longevity of wall claddings and furniture that are also subjected to sunlight in interior spaces. One universal protective film against UV radiation is the PLEXIGLAS® Film 99836 product variant that absorbs over 99 percent of all natural UV radiation.
Scratch-resistant EUROPLEX® HC films
For surfaces subjected to especially harsh conditions, particularly outdoors, EUROPLEX® HC Films 0F700 and 0F701 are ideal surface layers for HPL sheets. These are transparent films based on polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and which are coextruded with an adhesive agent. They are scratch-resistant and resistant to weathering. HPL protected by EUROPLEX® HC Film 0F701 have a surface hardness of level 5 as per EN 438-2.25:2016.
Chemical bonding prevents delamination
Protective films by Röhm are easy to process. Manufacturers do not need an additional plant or even process steps or adhesives for this: The films are simply applied to the HPL sheets during the production process. During pressing, they then undergo a chemical bonding process with the melamine resin-soaked decorative paper on the HPL sheet. This produces an inseparable covalent bond, which provides significantly improved adhesion and weather resistance compared to a physical bond. “Practical tests have confirmed its durability without any visible clouding or delamination,” Seyoum emphasizes.
PLEXIGLAS® Film 99836 and EUROPLEX® HC Film 0F700 have a standard thickness of 50 μm and are sold in widths of up to 2,800 mm. 75 μm and 90 μm thicknesses are also available.
