Guideline for workshop practice: PLEXIGLAS® and EUROPLEX® COC Films for microfluidic applications

PLEXIGLAS® Films

PLEXIGLAS® Films consist of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and contain polybutyl acrylate (PBA) as an impact modifier. The films contain varying degrees of UV absorbers and have the following property profile: weatherproof, UV-absorbent, scratch resistant (pencil hardness to 2 H), completely transparent, easy to form, easy to print (screen, digital, gravure and flexo printing)

EUROPLEX® HC* Films

EUROPLEX® HC Films are PMMA films that are co-extruded with PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride), in which the fluoropolymer is located on the surface. Both polymers are inextricably bonded in the film. The films are transparent and UV protective, with excellent weather resistance and anti-soiling effect. The PVDF layer provides outstanding resistance to chemicals and a stain-resistant surface, which is easy to clean. The PMMA side can be printed with customary color systems and bonds well with a wide range of substrates.

High pressure laminates

PLEXIGLAS® & EUROPLEX® Films

UV protective films for exterior compact laminate (HPL)

Thanks to our expertise in chemicals and to a patented formulation of co-extruded films, we have successfully developed a product range dedicated to the UV protection of vertical exterior grade compact laminates.

EUROPLEX® Film HC 0F700 is a highly performing weather resistant and transparent co-extruded PMMA and PVDF film. Its 3 layer design brings it to an UV protection level which had never been reached before in the High Pressure Laminates industry.

This film shows excellent performance in long term outdoor weathering without the risk of color change or yellowing.

The base layer is based on a tailor made PMMA resin that provides excellent chemical adhesion to melamine resin while the intermediate layer contains a high performing UV absorber package.

Last but not least, the PVDF top layer brings a high level of weatherability as well as a very good chemical resistance, anti-soiling, anti-fouling and easy to clean properties including graffiti.

GUIDELINES

Reflective solutions

PLEXIGLAS® & EUROPLEX® Films

For traffic control materials

We offer a variety of different grades, which can be used as an overlay for reflective materials.

These films can be either clear or transparent colored.

The colors fulfil regulations according to different international regulations.

Labels

PLEXIGLAS® & EUROPLEX® Films

For durable and tamper-evident labels

There are challenging and many different demands on today's labels.

In certain applications, it is crucial that important messages regarding

  • branding and compliance
  • safety and warnings
  • instructions
  • identity and traceability

remain legible on labels for lifetime of a product.

In other applications, brand protection and security have high priorities, due to the fact that counterfeiting damages sales, brand perception and product value. Requirements demanded by the label industry can be fulfilled almost entirely by the versatility of branded products such as PLEXIGLAS® and EUROPLEX® films.

As over-laminates equipped with UV absorbers, PLEXIGLAS® films protect labels and printed substrates from sunlight and effects of weathering, as well as ensure readability of important information for a desired period of time.

The PVDF layer of the EUROPLEX® HC film additionally offers improved chemical resistance. Moreover, soiling can be removed rapidly and effectively from the film surface. The combination of UV protection and high transparency ensures the highest optical quality, which is maintained even after many years of outdoor use. In addition, durable labels and printed substrates can be produced without over-lamination, because the PLEXIGLAS® surface can be printed on directly. Due to excellent surface optics, high-quality prints can be achieved.

In contrast, PLEXIGLAS® and EUROPLEX® security films are destructible and labels made from these films are visibly and irreversibly damaged after an attempt to remove them from their original position. Therefore, counterfeiting and tampering are topics of the past.

Our portfolio includes transparent films with smooth surface on both sides to opaque white-colored films with matt finish on one side, as well as films with different destructibility levels. PLEXIGLAS® films are made of 100% acrylic polymer. Therefore, they are halogen, solvent and plasticizer free and odorless. Another significant advantage is that the property profile itself does not change over time.

Selected grades meet the requirements of EU 10/2011.

Glass fiber reinforced plastics

PLEXIGLAS® & EUROPLEX® Films

For glass fiber reinforced plastics (GFRP)

PLEXIGLAS® and EUROPLEX® films contain UV absorber like many PLEXIGLAS® / EUROPLEX® brand products. They provide excellent protection against yellowing and degradation of the GFRP boards, which gives them high light transmission for a long term.

Due to the closed surface, the PLEXIGLAS® and EUROPLEX® protected GFRP sheets are less dirt-adherent. Our films cover the fibers and enable a highly aesthetic and smooth appearance over a long term.

PLEXIGLAS® and EUROPLEX® films show also a very good adhesion to GFRP panels. In addition, the EUROPLEX® film facilitates the cleaning of GFRP panels, of heavy soiling such as graffiti. PLEXIGLAS® and EUROPLEX® HC Films contain UV inhibitors and therefore are able to provide excellent protection against early yellowing and degradation of the GRP sheets.

Gravure and flexo printing

PLEXIGLAS® & EUROPLEX® Films

For gravure and flexo printing

Precision in optical characteristics and design. PLEXIGLAS® and EUROPLEX® HC Films can easily be printed with gravure or flexo printing technologies.

PLEXIGLAS® Films can either be top or reverse printed, whereas EUROPLEX® HC Films must be reverse printed.
Alternatively, both films can receive a decor through the heat transfer of inks printed onto a PET film. In the case of EUROPLEX® HC Films, the transfer has to be made onto the PMMA side.

Sheet lamination

PLEXIGLAS® & EUROPLEX® Films

For inline lamination onto sheets

PLEXIGLAS® and EUROPLEX® HC films can be used as capstock onto various polymeric extruded sheets.

Both films are laminated inline and can easily be integrated in the extrusion process. Standard process parameters are fully compatible with the achievement of the proper lamination.

For PMMA, ABS and PVC sheets, both films are heat laminated.

An adhesive layer may be needed with other polymers.

Light guide film

PLEXIGLAS® Films

High luminous efficacy at long distances

PLEXIGLAS® Film 0F058 provides excellent light transmission and brilliance due to very low optical damping. Thanks to this quality, light that is fed via edges of the film is guided without loss even over long distances, and thus a high luminous efficacy is achieved.

Therefore, PLEXIGLAS® Film 0F058 is ideal for light guide applications in displays.

High optical purity and transparency of the film allow for a highly efficient use of LEDs as light source.

The film is supplied in rolls and can therefore be processed in roll-to-roll production very efficiently.

Nano- and microstructures which are required for homogeneous illumination of a defined area can be hot embossed, printed, laser engraved or embossed in a UV curable lacquer.

Compared to other transparent films without hardcoat, PLEXIGLAS® Film 0F058 has superior scratch resistance and a higher stiffness at the same thickness.
