How PLEXIGLAS® supports the UN Sustainable Development Goals

The member states of the United Nations adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in September 2015.

This aims to shape global economic progress in a socially just manner and within the Earth’s ecological limits. The heart of this agenda is an ambitious list of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

These goals are to be achieved by 2030 through the joint efforts of states, companies and civil society. At Röhm GmbH, we are also contributing toward this necessary change – both through our PLEXIGLAS® products and as a company. The Sustainable Development Goals particularly relevant to us are:

Goal 2

End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture

More than 7.7 billion people are currently living on Earth, and this number is rising rapidly. Therefore, feasible ideas are needed as to how food can be produced more efficiently in order to feed the growing world population.
PLEXIGLAS® coverings have been making a contribution here for many decades, as they enable fruit and vegetables to be farmed commercially even in extreme climactic conditions.

The material also makes innovations possible: Microalgae could be an important protein source of the future – and these versatile organisms grow particularly well in PLEXIGLAS® tubes.

Goal 3

Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages

Nutrition, exercise and the environment are just three of the many factors upon which our health depends. Sunlight, for example, enhances well-being and activates the human organism. If UV radiation on the skin is too intense, however, this can be harmful to health.

When used as a cover or in a helicopter cockpit, PLEXIGLAS® allows light through while at the same time protecting against UV radiation. Furthermore, noise barriers made of PLEXIGLAS® increase quality of life in urban areas.

The brand acrylic glass itself does not present a health risk.

Goal 9

Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation

More and more people need more and more space to live and work. This is causing a global boom in construction – along with growing demand for resources.

Durable products such as PLEXIGLAS® can therefore play a key role in building a resilient infrastructure.

As such, PLEXIGLAS® allows façades, roofs, windows, noise barriers and other building elements to be used for a long period of time.

Goal 13

Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts

The UN Climate Change Conference in Paris held 2015 provided a glimmer of hope: The states agreed to limit global warming to less than 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. To make this a reality, states, companies and also private individuals need to drastically reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.

PLEXIGLAS® has been improving the climate footprint of greenhouses for decades thanks to its excellent thermal insulation properties.

At Röhm GmbH, we ensure that our products are manufactured as efficiently as possible in terms of resources.
