Lighting systems for hotels, shops and public buildings have to meet the highest standards when it comes to lighting technology and design. Specializing in contemporary lighting solutions, PLANLICHT uses covers made from light-scattering PLEXIGLAS® acrylic glass to create elegant luminaires with glare-free light.
Light is a key element of interior design. Modern lighting systems provide pleasant brightness and good visibility – and provide the perfect finishing touch to a room’s look. But in order to achieve the desired lighting effect in the best way possible, efficient light sources such as LEDs need covers made from LED-optimized materials.
With so many diverse properties, PLEXIGLAS®, the brand acrylic from POLYVANTIS, has proven to be an ideal material for luminaires with the highest standards of technology and design. POLYVANTIS has continuously developed its portfolio of special PLEXIGLAS® products for luminaires in line with its innovations in lighting technology. The products are also suitable for illumination with the latest generation of LEDs.
PLANLICHT a company with a long tradition based in Vomp in Austrian Tyrol, also values the material for luminaire construction. The cover plates for its “ophelia” and “olmo” surface lights are produced from light-scattering PLEXIGLAS® versions by PLEXIGLAS® processing partner Hans Fischer GmbH.
PLEXIGLAS® acrylic glass for surface lights with even light
The round “ophelia” and square “olmo” have a sleek, elegant design and can be used in a wide variety of ways: as ceiling, wall or pendant luminaires. For designer luminaires like this to radiate their full beauty, the point lighting of the LEDs needs to be evenly distributed. Yet the smaller the distance between the LEDs and the cover, the more likely it is that hotspots will be visible. This kind of unwanted difference in the brightness of backlighting can be prevented by light-scattering materials. Tailored to the location and type of use, PLANLICHT offers its luminaires with a diffuser made from PLEXIGLAS® Satinice or PLEXIGLAS® Textures: PLEXIGLAS® Satinice to create even, harmonious light. PLEXIGLAS® Textures for applications with higher demands on eliminating glare, such as in workplace environments.
Impressive properties in light technology
“PLEXIGLAS® Satinice allows us to achieve a completely homogeneous light. In addition, when the luminaire is switched off, the material appears rich white and reflection-free thanks to its matte surface,” explains Raimund Mayr, Technical Director at PLANLICHT.
Mayr is impressed with the light-related properties of PLEXIGLAS® products: “The fact that the LED-optimized materials offer both excellent light scattering and high light transmission makes it possible for us to create highly efficient lighting systems.”
PLANLICHT uses PLEXIGLAS® Textures 0A000 Z for the luminaire cover when lighting is to be used in areas with very high demands on comfortable viewing, such as in offices. “The surface texture guarantees outstanding glare control in all directions. That is important for lighting solutions to meet requirements, such as for screen workplaces,” explains Mayr.
Light covers from the plastics experts
“PLEXIGLAS® from POLYVANTIS is highly valued in the lighting industry – it is virtually unparalleled.”
- Tim Kulisch
Sales Manager at Hans Fischer GmbH
The cover plates for “ophelia” and “olmo” are made from PLEXIGLAS® acrylic glass by the plastics processing company Hans Fischer GmbH in Cologne. “We have a wealth of experience in processing plastic semi-finished products with satined and textured surfaces. We produce square and round covers in a range of sizes for PLANLICHT,” says Sales Manager Tim Kulisch. “Our state-of-the-art portal milling system and CO2 laser machines enable us to produce covers for large-scale surface luminaires.” With cost efficiency and sustainability just as important in lighting planning as excellent lighting conditions, the plastics processor makes sure to get the best possible use out of the material. “Special formats from producer POLYVANTIS also reduce waste in production,” says Kulisch.
And he points to further benefits of PLEXIGLAS® acrylic glass: It is significantly lighter than glass, and break resistant, too. It does not yellow, is durable, and is easy to machine in processing. “That is why the brand acrylic glass is so highly valued in the lighting industry – it is virtually unparalleled,” sums up Kulisch.
