Take a submarine trip in the Swiss lakes
The Swiss company, Subspirit, is offering private individuals the unforgettable experience of a submarine trip through Lake Lucerne. The front window of the special boat is made of PLEXIGLAS® 0Z00 and enables submarine trips up to a depth of 300 meters.
People have always been fascinated by the underwater world of large lakes. Many stories have been woven around sunken ships, airplanes or car wrecks that rest there. The desire to get to the bottom of their secrets is similarly great. The Swiss company, Subspirit, is now making this experience possible even for private individuals. Up to four passengers can descend to the depths of Lake Lucerne in a special submarine and discover unforgettable things there. Proposals for other Swiss lakes are being developed.
An experienced pilot guides the submarine deep into the gloom while a thrilling sensation of weightlessness sets in as you sink silently down. The many gauges, valves and instruments giving precise information about depth, pressure and temperature are an attraction for techies. But the real highlights can be seen by the light of the headlamps at the journey’s destination. The view of the sunken attractions is crystal clear - through the roughly 70-centimeter large front window made of high-strength PLEXIGLAS® 0Z00.
Equally fascinating: the technology that makes it possible.
Subspirit offers a unique experience where you will be amazed not only by the underwater world but also by the sophisticated technology and strong material behind the scenes. To enable the front window to withstand the enormous demands of ambitious dives, it was made from semi-finished PLEXIGLAS® 0Z00. At a thickness of 110mm and thanks to precision processing by the specialist fabricator, Heinz Fritz GmbH, according to the specifications of ASME-PVHO-1, a component was created that can withstand compressive forces up to a depth of 300 meters.
The sophisticated construction is a technical masterpiece because under water the pressure on each component increases by about one bar every ten meters – forces which only the most advanced materials can withstand. The final body of the submarine easily bears these stresses and so guarantees a completely safe adventure – certified according to the strict regulations of the DNV.
Brilliant vision combined with the utmost safety
Collaboration with the fabricator, Heinz Fritz GmbH, and use of the first-class material, PLEXIGLAS® 0Z00, from POLYVANTIS have enabled Subspirit to overcome the extraordinary challenges of deep-sea tourism and so create a once-in-a-lifetime experience. In our exclusive interview with CEO Philippe Eppelbaum and his team, we learn more about the innovative ideas and passion that are behind the Subspirit project.
