The problem: Crosswinds on bridges – an underestimated danger
Bridges are typically exposed construction. High above valleys or along coastlines, gusts of wind can reach storm force without warning. Strong crosswinds act directly on vehicles and significantly increase the risk of accidents. Tall vehicles such as trucks or buses are particularly at risk due to their large surface. Loss of control can occur even at wind force 8.
When a bridge has to be closed due to storm gusts, this results in considerable economic consequences: detours must be established; longer routes increase CO₂ emissions; delivery times cannot be met and this can even lead to production downtime. Therefore, effective wind protection can not only save lives but also safeguard the economic performance of infrastructure.
Our solution: A thermoformed PLEXIGLAS® element breaks the wind
PLEXIGLAS® Soundstop solid sheets can be formed into C-shaped shells or other geometries. Shape and design are decisive: gaps between the shells do not provide a continuous surface for gusts to attack, thereby reducing wind pressure on the bridge. At the same time, wind speed can be reduced by around half.
